Joshua Vail is Roll On Sushi Diner’s Executive Chef who just so happens to be a hip hop artist. Below are some of his thoughts on his culinary passion and lifestyle. He might perform this for you behind the sushi bar if you ask nicely J Enjoy!

“This world expands at an exponential rate. Yet within this high speed era, we all slow down to enjoy the essence of life - quite simply, food.

Since man could cook over fire, our palettes have been expanding. For example, my parents wouldn’t think to enjoy sushi, but my young children couldn’t imagine a world without it.

From clay pots to molecular gastronomy, we have pulled immaculate experiences from a globe’s worth of ingredients giving sustenance new dimension.

This makes me wonder. Is culinary passion the one thing that truly binds us together?”

Get Bulldog On a Bus! Help Bulldog Basketball Club Get To Their Games

Roll on Sushi Diner is teaming up with Bulldog Basketball to raise funds for a new bus! Join us as we help get the Bulldogs back on the road! Bulldog Basketball is a non-profit, public charity serving at-risk fourth and fifth graders in Austin, TX. Founded in 2007 on the four pillars of academics, attitude, effort and excellence, Bulldog Basketball’s mission is to teach its student-athletes to be successful in the game of life. The Bulldog Basketball program serves 22 young men & women per season, as well as around 50 student-athletes who attend their off season Basketball Skills Clinics. They purposely keep the number of participants low so they can give each the attention & effort needed to help affect their lives in a positive way. The program promotes character development, hard work and leadership over wins and losses to create a culture of achievement both on the court and off. With a small school bus, the Bulldogs will be able to transport their entire team to events safely, instead of struggling weekly to find enough drivers to transport them. Isn’t it funny that you can spend a long day, answering to “the man,” with the same people day-in-and-day-out; yet when five o’clock rolls around, you couldn’t imagine unwinding with anyone else? Or maybe your co-workers blow and you run to gossip about them with your “real friends.”

Either way, who wants to go home to laundry and dishes?

No hour of the day is as magical as Happy Hour. It’s a time to sit and talk, or stand and laugh with other participants in the rat race of life. Central TX Wildfire Victims Need Us All

The wonderful people of Central Texas are hurting right now. Yes, we’ve chosen a life in the desert, however, none of us signed up for a life of drought. The conditions this summer have been rough, and our lawns, fences and communities are dry, hot pressure cookers just waiting to explode - and then they did.

The residents of Bastrop, Leander, Steiner Ranch, Montgomery as well as dozens of other communities, were forced to flee their homes, hoping to find something when they returned. Estimates report that at least 1,300 families will not be so lucky.

In times like these, it is important for all of us to recognize that for every day we live, every day we achieve something new, every day we welcome a new family member; there is someone else experiencing loss.

Please help us do all that we can for the victims of the 2011 Central Texas Wildfires. Below is a link to resources needing help, please take a moment to see how you might be able to pitch in.

We live in a melting pot of creativity. This shouldn’t be news to anyone. Year-after-year, artists from different walks of life journey to the center of Texas seeking refuge from the boredom of normality. These artists hope to collect blessings from the muse so many call Austin. This coming together of talents is what gives Austin its sought-after “vibe.”

Austin music, can you define it? Most of us would say no, and we like to think it’s because we’re unimaginably unique and creative, but there’s another theory. Perhaps our diversity drives our style. We live here together now, but we started our existence in very different places, and we bring those very different experiences to life through art. Our vibe is a collaboration of experiences.

For musicians, experiences are put into a new sound; for writers it’s in a new voice; for painters it’s a new color; for foodies it’s in a new flavor. Original, fusion, alive – all things that define Austin, and all things that we encourage at Roll On Sushi Diner.

We talk a lot about fusion cuisine, but haven’t paid nearly enough respect to the original fusion art – which is music. Fusion by definition is the combination of two styles to create something totally new. Rock-and-roll is an excellent example, which electrified the 1950s with its combined blues, gospel and country sound, and opened the doors for the musicians we love today.

With the 2011 Austin City Limits heading its way towards us, we are excited to welcome our favorite musicians like: Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, Arcade Fire and Kanye West. Charity is so much more than just donations. It is about following the goodness of your heart to lift someone that is struggling. Charity embraces religion, education, assistance to the government, promotion of health, providing relief to those less fortunate and towards the general benefit of a community.

We have a responsibility as human beings to give back to the community where we live. It is the only way to ensure that community’s success. Whether we provide jobs, support organizations financially, or giving our time to others in need, it is our duty.

Many people hear the word “charity,” and think, “OK, where do I send the check?” However, there are so many ways for us to be supportive. You can volunteer at a local food bank, serve on committees at your place of worship, or simply make a grocery run for a neighbor that cannot.

If we all find a cause that is close to our hearts, and find a way to be helpful, this world might see peace and not war. Giving back to our community is not about our need to feel good, but about making others feel loved and protected.

At Roll On Sushi Diner, our goal is to support Austin and its surrounding communities. Our first contribution … is providing jobs. That is just the first of many other ideas we have about giving back to our fellow Austinites. After our grand opening in August, we plan to collaborate with local charities, and get involved with local artists – music, painters, Filmmakers etc. Hopefully, we can even encourage other local businesses to do the same. After all, even the smallest gesture makes an immeasurable difference to those in need.

what is the average price per person going to be?

Each dish is a fixed price, corresponding with the color of the plate on which the dish is served. The customer can order as much as they like. Once satisfied, the staff will count the number of each color plate to calculate the total bill. The fixed price plates apply to appetizers, rolls, salads, bowls and desserts ranging from $3.95 - $6.95 per plate. Just come on in, we’ll show you how it works. I believe the average is going to be about three plates per person.
